Award-winning American children's book illustrator and author Barbara Cooney died in Portland, Maine, at the age of 83. Her works received a National Book Award in the U.S. and two Caldecott Medals. Cooney's career spanned 60 years and 110 books. The last, titled Basket Moon, was published in September.
